Mexican officials have been stepping up their efforts against the illegal virtual casino machine industry in the past several weeks.

Last week, representatives from the Mexican Federal Office of the Attorney General seized 30 illegal virtual casino slot machines in the beach- side popular resort town of Acapulco, Guerrero. The virtual casino slots had been set up in convenience stores, candy shops, and other retail establishments that generally attract children. They were mainly located in the poorer neighborhoods of the city.

The virtual casino slot machines offered prizes of up to US $20, and were owned by a mysterious man known only as “the Lord of the Games.” This man paid the owners of the retail establishments a monthly commission in order for permission to install the virtual casino slots on their premises.

Police investigators in Ciudad Juarez carried out a similar raid on the virtual casino machines installed there last year.

Despite efforts to stamp out this sort of machine, the Mexican government is moving forward with plans to grant permits for temporary casinos to be used during festivals and fairs. In Cancun, for example, authorities granted one gambling operator permission to set up a table game center during the city’s international fair.
